S.D. Singh’s Judgments and How to Write Them is an authoritative text on judgment and judgment writing.
The book is divided into four parts. Part I of the book deals with various facets of judgment writing. The discussion ranges from pure legal aspects of judgment like framing of issues, discussion of evidence, passing remarks, ratio decidendi, per incuriam decisions, etc. to individual flavour given in judgments like use of poetry and shayari in judgments.
Part II of the book contains a note for candidates appearing for judicial services and also model judgments in civil and criminal cases to give the readers an idea of various parts of a judgment.
Part III of the book includes statutory provisions relating to judgments in Civil Procedure Code and Criminal Procedure Code.
Part IV of the book is a collection of articles and addresses of judges on judgment writing, role of judges and tips on how to become a good judge.
The book includes at appropriate places sample judgment/orders in civil, criminal and miscellaneous cases, sample assessment orders, etc. The book discusses some of the important observations of the Supreme Court on judgment writing like the Saheli Leasing Case, (2010) 6 SCC 384.
This updated work will be useful for judges, magistrates, presiding officers of quasi judicial bodies and for candidates appearing for the judicial services examinations.
The work is a must for induction programmes conducted for judicial officers at judicial training academies.
